Time-Outs vs Time-In

Time-outs are out, in part because of the unpleasantness associated, like screaming and thrashing, but also because experts have begun to encourage what they call a more positive, guidance-based approach to discipline, or Time-In.

Time-Outs hurt children's confidence and self-esteem. What goes along with that in a child's world is devastating, and it just breaks my heart. I strongly believe in the Time-In approach to guide     behaviour.

The basic idea behind the guidance approach (Time-Ins) is to teach rules of behavior by talking them over with children and finding opportunities for children to make an emotional connection to them.

While researching ways of implementing the guidance approach to behaviour, I came across the idea of the Cuddle Corner. This initiative works like this: when children get distress and the traditional re-direction does not work and/or they just have an outburst of unacceptable behaviors, then, I invite them to go to the Cuddle Corner and offer to go with them. I sit with the children who are upset and cuddle, read, and offer them their favorite stuffed animals to hold. When the children feel ready, they can rejoin the program.

More information regarding the Cuddle Corner initiative can be found, Here.
